Black Friday, Now an American Holiday

What is the meaning of Christmas in America? The answer is found on Black Friday. How many churches have people waiting outside in line for hours on Christmas day? No two for one specials. How many churches have bulging parking months before the big day? Christmas you have officially been superseded by Black Friday as the holiday of choice for America.

We are told that Black Friday makes or breaks the retail sales business. So, it is now a matter of civic duty to get out there and spend some money on this day. You are helping America people, so get out there and spend some money!

I did my civic duty this year. I went out to see what this Black Friday was all about. The interesting thing was everyone out there was complaining about being out there, yet, there they were, celebrating the ritual.

The stores dangled their empty promises for all the shoppers. The "fool's bet" as I like to call it. That's when the stores advertise an item with a deep discount and very limited quantity. Oh poor shoppers, those deals were gone at 5 a.m. yet you still come looking, searching, fixated on your bargains.

Yes America, the malls give you purpose now, not the churches. Oh you still pay the churches lip service but we all know where you spend your time. The rush and the hype draws you out to join you fellow shoppers in the greatest event on earth. It is what the rest of the world aspires to do. Battle in aisle 3 for that last Dora doll. Push past your fellow shopper to get that last camera. Display that sour look and grunt as you join the lengthy line. Black Friday you are America.

This is a sad but true commentary. We have truly placed our values in what is hot for the season. This not only reflects in our circle of influence but in our children.

I couldn't agree more. Christmas in my opinion has this sense of desperation around it as people chase those hot items, when it should have a sense of salvation.
